Marriott International’s Road to Awareness Campaign is set to hit the road again to celebrate 10 years of cycling for charity. This year, the campaign will take place in Jordan with a 600km cycle challenge between October 12-14.
Since the campaign launched nine years ago it has raised over $7 million, every cent of which has been donated to help underprivileged children.
The campaign’s aim to raise awareness and funds for charity has inspired employees of the hotel for years. Guido De Wilde, the founder of Road to Awareness and the Chief Operating Officer Middle East for Marriott International, explained that his inspiration for the idea came from the hotel industry’s commitment to hospitality and generosity.
“We wanted to give back to the community – it’s part of our nature as hoteliers, being the kind of people who like to look after and support others. The generosity, spirit, and commitment demonstrated by our associates across the region who take part each year always inspires me and makes me so proud,” Guido said in a press release.
A team consisting of 24 Marriott International employees from across the Middle East and Africa will take part in the gruelling challenge, which hopes to also tap into the undiscovered cycling world in Jordan. The cycle challenge will start at the Dead Sea before journeying through the coastal town of Aqaba. From Aqaba the cycling will continue on to Petra, after which the team will cycle back to the Dead Sea.
Cycling Jordan will be providing the cyclists with mechanics and support cars throughout the three-day journey. The team will also be joined by two guest riders: former Jordanian national cycling champion Ammar Al Satari and Cycling Jordan’s Sari Husseini.
The Marriott employees who signed up for the challenge aim to raise a minimum of $500,000, which will be donated to regional charities selected by the participating cyclists.
“The campaign’s ongoing objective is to not only make a positive difference in the world and aid those living in underprivileged circumstances, but also to encourage their employees to live healthier, fitter lives while creating unforgettable memories and fostering life-long friendships,” said a Marriott International press release. The Road to Awareness campaign is part of Marriott International’s list of corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments.
In previous years, the campaign has taken place in Europe, in beautiful venues like the French Alps, and has largely raised funds for UNICEF. Associates from Starwood Hotels & Resorts used to lead the way in the Road to Awareness campaign, but now the campaign has a bigger home following Marriott International’s expanded portfolio.
